Level Switches
Level switches give an electrical signal when the liquid in a tank, sump or reservoir reaches a set height. They start or stop a pump, open a valve or trigger an alarm, so a tank does not run dry or overflow and nobody has to watch the level.
The float switches in this category come in two designs. Cable float switches hang freely on their cable and tilt when the liquid lifts them. They are made for water, wastewater and sump pits, where they often switch a pump directly. Vertical float switches are fixed in the top of the tank, and the float moves along a guide tube or rod. They are common on hydraulic tanks, lubrication units and other closed tanks, where the switch point must stay at an exact height.
Choose by the tank and the medium first. In an open pit or a water tank, a cable float switch is simple to install and adjust. In a closed tank with a threaded port or a flange, a vertical float switch gives a fixed, repeatable switch point and connects to the machine wiring with a standard plug. Then check the contact type and load, the pressure and temperature rating, and whether the float material suits the medium.
