Electric Motors
Electric motors convert electrical energy into rotation and drive almost every type of machine, from pumps, fans and compressors to conveyors, mixers and hydraulic power units. A motor is chosen to match both the power supply that feeds it and the load it has to turn.
The supply divides motors into two main families. AC motors run on alternating current; three-phase induction motors are the standard industrial drive because they are robust, efficient and need very little maintenance. DC motors run on direct current, for example from batteries or low-voltage supplies, and their speed is easy to control.
Whatever the type, the same points decide the choice. The motor must deliver the power and torque the load needs at the required speed. The mounting form and frame size must fit the machine, and the shaft must match the coupling or pulley. The enclosure rating, duty type and ambient temperature must suit the place where the motor works. For variable speed or a soft start, check that the motor is suitable for operation on a frequency inverter.
