The SIMATIC ET 200SP is a BaseUnit BU20-P6+A2+4D, BU type C0, equipped with Push-in terminals as well as 2 AUX terminals. Its introduction brought about a new load group and it measures 20 mmx117 mm. This device is a modular, scalable, and highly flexible distributed I/O system, which is compact enough to fit into small control boxes near the machine. Its modules can either be plugged directly into an ET 200SP CPU or connected to a central controller via PROFINET or PROFIBUS.

This system can be expanded with up to 64 I/O modules which can be inserted in any combination, providing a comprehensive range of modules. There are many modules available with a wide variety of characteristics, which notably improve scalability in terms of functionality and cost. In addition to standard function (ST) modules, there are also modules with an extended range of functions and diagnostics (HF High Feature / HS High Speed). Basic function (BA) modules are available for cost-sensitive applications.

One of the benefits of the ET 200SP system is its easy application, which includes features such as the free selection of the PROFINET connection technology via the BusAdapter, tool-free wiring using push-in technology, improved access to wiring due to a new arrangement of spring releases, in addition to the associated conductor aperture and channel-precise diagnostic functions. The machine's availability and productivity are ensured by the capability of swapping modules and terminal boxes during operation, a feature known as "hot swapping".

The cost-optimized configuration of an ET 200SP station is ensured by the wide range of signal modules. Along with digital and analog input and output modules, fail-safe variants are also available for applications of up to SIL 3 / PLe. This also applies to the integrated motor starters, which can handle motors of up to 5.5 kW. Additional features include Energy Meters for measuring and analyzing energy consumption, IO-Link master (V1.1.), and a range of communication and technology modules. All of these features allow for the system to be adapted to any automation task.
