A plastic check valve allows fluid to flow only in one direction. This prevents the flow of fluid in the back direction, which could cause contamination or damage to other components. Check valves work automatically and do not need to be operated. Most types have a small spring to close the valve, the medium pressure in the forward direction opens the valve. Note that there is a minimum pressure required to open the valve (usually called cracking pressure). The housing of these valves is made out of plastic, which is a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel and brass for many applications.
