Hydraulic Throttle Valves

Hydraulic throttle valves set the speed of cylinders and hydraulic motors by restricting the oil flow through an adjustable orifice. Turning the adjustment knob narrows or widens the passage, so the actuator moves slower or faster. A plain throttle valve has no check valve and restricts the flow equally in both directions.

The valves mount directly in the pipe line with threaded ports. Because the flow through an orifice depends on the pressure difference across it, a simple throttle valve gives a speed that changes when the load changes. That makes it a good fit for applications where a fixed, approximate speed is enough, such as slowing a cylinder or limiting the speed of a motor.

Size the valve on flow, not only on thread size, and check that its pressure rating covers the system pressure. When the actuator must be slowed in one direction only and return at full speed, choose a hydraulic throttle check valve instead: it throttles one way and lets the return flow pass freely. To mount the valve behind a control panel with only the knob on the front, use a matching panel mounting set.
